　　飓风威力果真愈演愈烈？卡崔娜又是如何形成？节目将探索飓风卡崔娜的生命周期,并以特殊的角度，带您认识美国史上死伤最多、损失最惨重的天灾。节目中还将穿插现场报导，并访问美国联邦急难管理总署（FEMA）在内的联邦与州政府官员，以及路易斯安那州、密西西比州与佛罗里达州的生还者。心力交瘁的他们如今极需水、食物与医药等救援物资。
　　节目将从2005年8月29日的凌晨时分开始记录，当时迈阿密国家飓风中心的科学家设法追踪风暴路径，预测飓风的登陆时间与地点。当卡崔娜横扫沿岸，科学家记述了罕见5级飓风背后的自然因素，以及卡崔娜特别惊人致命的原因。节目焦点放在「风暴潮」的现象，还有当风暴仍在几百哩外的海上，一项测量飓风破坏潜力的先进科技，间接促使了有关当局发出史无前例的疏散命令，及时拯救几千条人命。
　　除了记录飓风卡崔娜在墨西哥湾的破坏路径，节目中还将解释，何以纽奥良并未直接遭受飓风袭击，但该市的地形却使得它受创极深。墨西哥湾沿岸大部分地区如今因为飓风卡崔娜的摧残而陷入瘫痪，形成美国史上最严重的天灾之一，布希总统在飞越该区视察后，警告复原工作恐将耗时多年。
　　《夺命飓风：剖析卡崔娜》也将从历史角度探究，何以许多科学家认为我们正进入飓风活跃期，像卡崔娜这样的强烈风暴日后将越来越常见。
