Japans Hauptstadt gilt vielen als Stadt der Zukunft. Dabei war Tokio noch vor 150 Jahren Edo - eine Stadt aus einfachen Holzbauten mit einer Million Einwohnern. Die Edo-Zeit endete im späten 19. Jahrhundert. Im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde Tokio zweimal zerstört, zuerst durch ein großes Erdbeben, dann während des Zweiten Weltkriegs durch US-Bomben.
