　　本片根据真实事件改编，取材自一起三十年未能侦破的刑事案件，讲述了一个哥哥在不断寻找失踪妹妹的过程中希望逐步褪变成绝望的故事。
　　1989年夏天，汉堡高级警官托马斯·贝特格的妹妹芭芭拉·内德尔从位于下萨克森州-韦森伯格镇附近的家中失踪，从此以后下落不明。就在不久前，两对夫妇在附近的一个大森林里相继被残忍杀害，警方很快将犯罪嫌疑人锁定为艺术家汉斯·林格纳，因为林格纳住在森林边上且痴迷于枪支。起初，警方并没有将发生在该"死亡之林"（伊塞森林）里的谋杀案和芭芭拉·内德尔失踪案联系到一起。下萨克森州警方反倒很快怀疑上芭芭拉的丈夫罗伯特·内德尔，案发时他正准备与芭芭拉离婚。两人的女儿特蕾莎也因母亲的失踪和父亲的犯罪嫌疑而备受折磨，痛苦万分，之后连她也开始相信自己的父亲是杀害母亲的凶手。
　　与此同时，下落不明的芭芭拉的哥哥--汉堡警局局长托马斯·贝特格面临着一生中最难执行的任务：找到失踪的妹妹。但作为汉堡警察，依法他无法在下萨克森州开展调查工作。不过在警察安妮·巴赫和昔日同事兼下属的弗兰克·贝林格的支持下，退休的托马斯·贝特格仍锲而不舍地调查，并已经追踪到了一名连环杀人案嫌疑人。
